Inpatient / Observation Unit

Located on the second floor of the Health Center, a 6 bed inpatient unit is available for students upon orders of a University physician. Care is provided for students who are recovering from a surgical procedure, or who need intravenous fluids or medications, or who require nursing expertise and care.

If the student lives on campus, there is no charge for physician and nursing care or for room and meals, as this has been covered in their fee for room and board. There is a modest daily charge to off-campus students for room and board. For all inpatient students, charges are generated for supplies and procedures only.

Visiting hours are until 9:00 p.m. or at the discretion of the nursing staff.

Laboratory

The South Bend Medical Foundation (SBMF) is a CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) certified laboratory, which provides services on campus for all Notre Dame students. The lab is located within the University Health Services and is open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. Testing on-site includes CBC’s (complete blood count), Urinalysis, Sedimentation Rates, Infectious Mononucleosis screens, and Occult Blood screens. Results are available for all testing performed at the campus lab within 30 minutes to 1 hour of specimen collection. Students are welcome to bring laboratory orders from physicians outside the University Health Services.

Samples for testing not performed on site are sent by courier three times daily to SBMF’s Central Lab located in downtown South Bend.

The South Bend Medical Foundation will bill the student’s legal guardian for the laboratory services provided unless otherwise directed. Please call (574) 236-7221 with any billing questions.

X-RAY

X-Ray hours are Monday through Friday: 10:30 am - 4:00 pm during the academic year.
We utilize other x-ray facilities in the community if x-rays are needed after our hours of operation.

Radiology service on campus provides an immediate diagnostic tool supporting timely evaluation and treatment. Written or faxed orders from physicians outside University Health Services will be accepted after review by one of the Health Center physicians.

Most X-rays can be done here at the Health Center. We refer students to community facilities (Radiology, Inc., X-Ray Consultants) if specialized tests such as CT scans, MRI’s, or contrast studies are ordered by the physician.

The ordering physician reviews all x-rays immediately and will discuss results with the student. The films are then routed to Radiology, Inc., and are reviewed by one of their radiologists within 24 hours.

Students are charged a minimal fee for the x-ray to be taken. The radiologists who read the films will send a separate bill to the responsible party, or file with the student’s insurance if that information is provided at the time of service. An itemized statement will be sent to the student, and charges will be placed on his/her student account.

Allergy Injections

The University Health Center will provide Students the continuation of allergy injection
therapy based on the guidelines sent by their allergist.

Information and Forms for students who are under an immunotherapy regimen prescribed by their private physicians can be downloaded. (Acrobat pdf format)

Immunizations

The State of Indiana mandates college students born after 1957 to have proof of immunization or proof of having natural immunity to measles (rubeola), mumps, and rubella. (Any person born before 1957 is considered to have had the diseases, and is considered exempt from the requirement.) The requirement includes two measles vaccines, one after their first birthday, and one at least 28 days after the first one, mumps, rubella, and tetanus.

Proof may be provided through the following options:

  • Written documentation by the practitioner who administered the vaccines.
  • Written documentation by the practitioner who diagnosed the active disease.
  • Blood tests (titers) drawn to determine the presence of antibodies to these diseases, demonstrating having them.
  • Obtaining Immunizations from this Health Center, your own private physician, or local Public Health Department.

If the student is deficient in providing this documentation, they are prevented from registering for classes until the requirements are met.

For recommendations of the American College Health Association regarding immunizations for college students, please visit http://www.acha.org/info_resources/guidelines.cfm

Travel Consultation

Pre‑travel health counseling is essential to assure a safe and healthy vacation or study time abroad. Your particular travel medical needs will depend on:

  1. your exact destination(s)
  2. your planned activities
  3. your health and immunization history

Schedule an appointment at least 4 weeks prior to departure by calling 631-7497, and follow the voice prompt to the Travel Nurse extension.

Plan 30 – 60 minutes for the travel consultation appointment. You will be given specific information about vaccines and prescriptions required or recommended to prevent illness in the area of your travel. You will also receive health and safety tips to follow while traveling abroad. There is no charge for this consultation. If you choose to get your vaccines at the Health Center, charges will be applied to your student account. All travel vaccines are available at the Health Center: Hepatitis A, B, Twinrix, DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), Polio, Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Rabies, MMR, Varicella, Menomune, and Japanese Encephalitis. Medications are also available for travelers’ diarrhea and malaria.

If your travel program requires you to have a physical examination, and if it is a program sponsored by the University of Notre Dame, you may make an appointment with the Travel Nurse for this. For those students who will be traveling on University-sponsored programs, you should have received a Health Questionnaire to complete. If not, you may print a copy from here: Health Questionnaire There is no charge at the Health Center for this physical exam or the completion of this form
