New Students/Parents

Welcome to the University of Notre Dame

Prior to your arrival on campus, please read and consider the following information concerning University Health Services and health insurance. All Notre Dame students are invited to use our medical services regardless of having private, school-sponsored insurance, or no insurance coverage.

  • Students are not charged to be seen by a health care professional at University Health Center. However, charges are generated for any supplies, medications, specialized procedures, labs, and x-rays that may be needed in the course of treatment. All charges, except lab and radiology, are forwarded to Student Accounts and will appear on the student’s billing as “Health Services” unless the student requests to pay at time of service.
  • All students are encouraged to have health insurance; however, it is only mandatory for graduate and international students. All graduate and international students must provide proof of alternate insurance coverage by Sept. 15, or the University-sponsored insurance will automatically be billed on the student’s account.
  • It is important to know the limitations of your health insurance plan if you are covered by a “home” insurance plan. Many HMOs and PPOs may require that blood work, x-rays, physical therapy and specialist referrals be done only at “in-network” facilities. Students may find it inconvenient to return home for these services and may want to consider the school-sponsored plan.
  • While we are convenient and are appreciated for our cost effectiveness and support to the students, a student may elect to seek services elsewhere in the community if insurance filing and reimbursement is a concern. It is the student’s responsibility to know his or her insurance policy and its requirements.

NOTE: We do not file claims or participate in any insurance plan other than the University-sponsored student insurance plan.
